Mary Lou Makepeace understands the value of public service and civic involvement. Ms. Makepeace served as Colorado Springs first female mayor, from 1997 to 2003. Today she continues her strong community leadership in support of equality and diversity, creating community change, and encouraging others to do the same.

Dedication, commitment and a passion to improving our community represent values that the League stands for. LWVPPR recognized women who share these values at a reception for the Award nominees on Thursday, February 11. Mary Lou Makepeace received The Making Democracy Work Award for her inspirational leadership and outstanding work to make our community a strong, safe, and vibrant place to live.

The League was pleased to honor all of the nominees for the 2010 Making Democracy Work Award.
